Fox & Wit Weekly Book Recommendations: 6 Not Cover Buys for Fab Reads
Posted by Mary Nguyen on
Are you tired of choosing books based solely on their covers? Our latest blog post is here to guide you towards must-read books that go beyond their cover designs to offer truly fabulous reads. We've curated a selection of exceptional novels that might not have the most eye-catching covers but are brimming with captivating stories, rich characters, and unforgettable narratives. These hidden gems prove that sometimes the best reads come from the pages themselves, not just the visual appeal.
For readers who appreciate diverse and inclusive literature, we also recommend Fox & Wit, a book subscription box that focuses on queer and marginalized voices. Each box is thoughtfully curated with underhyped books and exclusive goodies that celebrate a range of identities and support representation. Fox & Wit is perfect for expanding your reading horizons and discovering new, impactful authors.
Every week we'll put together a list of book recommendations which you can find here on our blog but also our instagram @foxandwit if you'd like to give us a follow!
We all judge a book by its cover whether we want to admit it or not. This post is not meant to shame any designer or cover artists involved. This is simply highlighting books that I personally think are fantastic reads, but the covers might not appeal to most people otherwise. Please refrain from attacking any of the covers as we never know who sees a public blog post on this account.
Dive into our top picks for not-just-cover buys and uncover incredible books that will enchant and engage you from start to finish. Discover stories that prove true literary value lies within the pages.
The City Beautiful by Aden Polydoros
Into the Bloodred Woods by Martha Brockenbrough
The Winter King by C.L. Wilson
Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier
And lastly,
A Heart in a Body in the World by Deb Caletti
The Brightest Star in Paris.
A Heart in a Body in the World is my favorite book on this entire list. I avoided reading it because the cover was not it for me AND the title is frankly terrible. I had received this ARC and had tried giving it away four times, but no one wanted it either. So, I thought "you know what? I'm just gonna read it" and it is, to this day, one of my favorite books. I loved it so much that I taught it in my classroom to my college students for three years (the perk of being a literature professor is you get to force your favorite books upon people.) And guess what? They loved it as well. It's such an incredibly powerful book and I hope that you step outside your comfort zone and give it a read.
